Hi everyone, I wanted to send this note to all of you. I just joined the Advocate magazine (and www.advocate.com) as the new executive editor. One of my personal missions is to increase the coverage of bisexual and transgender women and men, lesbians, and people of color everywhere on the LGBT spectrum.
About me: I'm either a lesbian-identified bisexual or a bisexual-identified lesbian; my husband of 21 years is transgender, though he was a woman when I married him. I've identified along the spectrum but most often I call myself queer because I find it makes me less invisible as a woman with a husband (and yes, I know that can be seen as making bisexuality less visible). When Dan Savage said women's sexual orientation was fluid beyond all reason (in response to a New York Times article), he was talking about me. So I get it.
Regardless, I've always been committed to fairly representing bi folks and I was clear with the staff her when I was signing on that I felt like the Advocate hadn't done a great job at that in the past.
I want to change that, and welcome your stories, ideas, issues.
So I sort of wanted to just send a shout out to y'all and introduce myself, give you my work email (which is diane.anderson-minshall@advocate.com) and phone (310-943-5952).
I'd love to hear your ideas, your issues, bisexual people we should be covering or at least have on our radar. Please, feel free to send stuff my way. I can't promise to answer immediately but I promise to read every email I get. And give me a few issues (I'm working on October's issue now) but then let me know how you think I'm doing as well.
