Oh the arrogance of the Canadian media with their tongue in cheek..:yikes2:

The betting site paddypower.com (http://www.paddypower.com/bet/novelty-betting/current-affairs/pope-betting) – for our purposes, let’s call it an options market - gives Canadian Marc Cardinal Ouellet the best odds, at this point, of being selected the next pope after the surprise resignation today of Benedict XVI.

Paddy Power gives the Canadian odds of 5 to 2. At the same time, a Wall Street Journal colleague quipped on Twitter about how we already have the Bank of England. All of which got me to thinking, well, why not? Canadians have been making their mark globally of late, so we may as well have the Holy See, too.

Consider:
Mark Carney was just poached from the Bank of Canada to take over as governor of the Bank of England, which isn’t quite as old as the Vatican, but you can still measure its history in centuries. (On Twitter today was this comment from a Bloomberg reporter: “Have to figure if Mark Carney had known the papacy was available he wouldn't have taken the BOE job so quick.”

Canada’s Moya Greene heads Britain’s Royal Mail.
Glenn Murphy is CEO of Gap Inc.
Stephen Elop runs Nokia Corp.
Dominic Barton is worldwide managing director of McKinsey & Co.
Italian-Canadian Sergio Marchionne heads up the Fiat group.
Former Dorval executive Normand Boivin is chief operating officer at Heathrow Airport.
Michael Rapino is chief of Live Nation Entertainment Inc.
Mitch Garber runs Caesars Entertainment.
Sue Gardner is executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation.
And the list goes on ...

Is there anything that can be done to drag the Popacy into the second millennium?

Does it matter who is Pope as far as the world's mainstream attitudes towards bisexuals?

Who cares who the next child molester is? The Roman Catholic church will never support bisexuals or LGBT rights even though they are the world's largest closet!

A priest, a child molester, a pedophile, a liar and a closeted gay guy walk into a bar. And that's just the first guy.

the next Pope should be someone NOT involved in covering up the crimes of the Nazis or those of child molester priests. Something that Herr Rattzinger was guilty of on both countrs befeore he became Benedict XIV. We need a progressive Pope, a modern Pope, one who will carry the church in to the 21st century instead of religating it back to the middle ages.

Aren't the phrases " a child molester, a pedophile," back to back redundant?

Oh, so it's a fill in the blank? Hmmm how about "gay" or "female" ?

"able to let the priests marry" was a close runner-up but there are plenty of other denominations where marriage is acceptable.

Not necessarily.. a paedophile is an adult or young person (generally considered to be around at least 5 years older than the victim) whose sexual urges bring him or her to molest a prepubescent child.. a Hebephiliac, one who for ease of description molests a post pubescent child usually considered to be in the 11-14 age group, and an ephebophiliac is one whose sexual interests are adolescent children of 15 until that child or children reach the legal age of consent which differs from country to country...

Do you honestly believe that the next child molester put into power will not cover up the sick ped0 shit done by that church since it started, and through the centuries? Anyone who can think for themselves quit the Roman Catholic church a long time ago and never went back.
Dan Savage! There can be no other! Ewwwwwww. He is a chickenhawk so he would like that. It's obvious to most people he started his failure of "It gets better" not to actually help LGBT youth who are doing quite well on their own, but to self promote, get money, and get closer to gay white male youth since he's a chickenhawk.

All of the talk aside, it is likely that the next Pope will be an ultraconservative. before long, liberals will be wishing they had Benedict back.

They are saying that there might be a non-European pope--one that is possibly African or from South America----I hope that is true and I also hope that they finally get real and don't vote in some man that is already well along in years----they need some young blood--like some "kid" who is like say in his 50s!!!

I also hope that whoever is the next pope---he will address in a hard and true way---some of the things that are bad with the Catholic Church--like their pedophile priest problem and that they need to get real when it comes to the ordination of women for the priesthood---like maybe they should start to move that way---but then again---they need a major change in the way they view women---basically as chattel that is nothing more than mere breeding stock, but yet----women are wanton whores and harlots that are "occasions of sin" that incite the uncontrollable lust in men--and when women do get pregnant for having enticed a man to fuck her---its all her fault that she got knocked up!!

Bascially---the Catholic Church needs to update so much of their thoughts, policies and such to more closely align with the realities of the current century---not remain stuck back in say the 16th century.

But will they do the rational and reasonable thing?? Probably not---I am not holding my breath that any such "modernizations" actually take place---it seems that the members of the Curia, instead of looking forward---are stuck in the past and look that way instead of to the present and future.

I recall when this Pope was selected that he was referred to by some “experts” as a transitory Pope. There was not going to be much moving forward or Ecumenical Councils happening during his term. Reference to his age and his extreme conservatism were pointed out.

More interesting was the prediction earlier this year that this Pope would resign rather than die in office. That seemed so unbelievable when someone made the statement. I find it as unbelievable that the next Pope will permit women in to the priesthood but then ...

I think that the Church is very much out of step with North America and as someone pointed out it is decreasing in numbers and role in North America. If a Canuck were elected Pope who knows what might happen. If a South American or African were elected Pope it would place influence in the hands of the areas of the world where Catholicism has its numbers.

With this Pope still alive, it will be interesting if he tries (in the back room) to influence or even head a delegation opposed to making the Church more contemporary. Comments are being made how the divisiveness within the Church will be more visible (at least until a new Pope is selected)

Unlike Islam, Catholicism has a hierarchy much like the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism. Unlike the Dalai Lama, the Popes have tended to have difficulty addressing contemporary issues. Still 1.2 billion is a large flock to lead. There are still a large enough number of countries socially and politically opposed to same sex interaction that equality issues may not be addressed. Equality issues concerning female priests would probably be addressed before same sex marriages. Even birth control and condom use still place the Church so much out of step. You never know though.

Stephen Cobert says....(from the Toronto Star )

http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/television/2013/02/12/stephen_colbert_says_canadian_cardinal_would_make_ bad_pope.html

"While the late-night funnyman acknowledged Quebec native Marc Cardinal Ouellet is in the running, he just couldn’t see him in the Church’s top job.

Ouellet, the funnyman says, has one major weakness: he’s a Canadian.

“The Pope cannot be polite,” said Cobert, standing in front of his “Papal Speculatron 7500.”

“I’m sorry but ‘I think God might not want you to use a condom, eh’ won’t work.”

He also said nobody wants a Pope who might replace the traditional golden staff, while a doctored photo showed Ouellet in papal robes holding a Team Canada hockey stick.

The satirical newsman frequently needles America’s northern neighbour on his show.

Ouellet, named a cardinal in 2003 by Pope John Paul II, was tabbed by Pope Benedict in 2010 to head the powerful Congregation for Bishops, which vets nominations for bishops worldwide. Foreign bookmakers have ranked him as one of the most likely candidates to take over from Pope Benedict.

Colbert also mentioned Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, and Peter Cardinal Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, as contenders.

But they didn’t get the Colbert Bump, which is his highest endorsement.

That went to Timothy Cardinal Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York, someone Colbert described as “a BFF — Bishop Friend Forever.”

“After all, God’s an American,” Colbert explained. “That’s why the Bible is in English.”

Benedict must be very sick to have resigned on only two weeks' notice.

Apparently it was in the works since the Pope was in Mexico last year - just not announced by the Vatican.
