Very interesting. I particularly enjoyed the parallel between cocaine and drano. Although the more logical side of my brain says cocaine should be illegal due to the lives it destroys.

Very interesting article indeed. Kind of all over the place, but that's alright.
Like Azrael, I don't quite agree with the cocaine/Drano parallel. Drano is made specifically for the purpose of cleaning drains. If you use it another way... that's on you. (Also, you'll be dead. Anyone seen "The Heathers"? There are no repeat Drano abusers, so it's not like they'd need all those organizations the author spoke of.. except maybe a Don't Do That, Stupid.)
Cocaine on the other hand, has pretty much only one purpose. I doubt its effectiveness as a tile scrubber has been analyzed.... most expensive bathroom cleaner EVER.

An inspired and inspirational book. I'm about half way through. I got a bit bored with the history of the American constitution etc. being English, but other than that, it's just the sort of thing liberals like me enjoy reading because it totally affirms lots of things I feel strongly about ;) With regard to cocaine, I think you miss the point if you say that it should be illegal because it destroys people's lives. The author's point is that it's everyone's personal choice what they want to do to themselves and their property, even if they choose to do something that will hurt them. The only problem I have with his argument is that he hasn't really looked (so far) at how drugs can destroy others' lives as well, like those of the children of drug users. He does, however, make the point that it's worse to tear children from their families than to put them in situations where they may be exposed to people taking drugs.

One thing missing from his cocaine argument is the fact that there are more people involved in the use of cocaine than just the user. I'll happily agree that possession and use shouldn't be illegal; but I still think that sale or distribution of cocaine is a crime, unless it's done by qualified people who can ensure that the people they're selling/distributing the cocaine to have a full understanding of the effects of the drug. In other words, pharmacists.
