hey all, we were just curious, are we the only sci-fi fans out there on this board? have any of you attended any conventions? Ever meet anyone there? Are you in the closet about being a sci-fi fan? We're heading to the VULKON convention in Orlando again this year and every time we have been there, we have had to wonder just how many folks there are bi / gay / or just play

Someday, perhaps....

I grew up watching the originals, "Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits" as a kid and have always been drawn towards the magical “What if…” Always a big "Star Trek" fan as well. It always amazes me on how we perceived the future would be through scifi, back then, and how amazing close to some of those preconceptions we’ve come and yet nowhere near in other areas.. For example,I thought back when I was younger that by the year 2006 that we’d be much further along in space exploration. By the same token I also figured having lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis and recalling the fear it evoked in many of my elementary school classmates, that we would have annihilated ourselves by now as well. Sometimes “Life” is stranger than fiction I think, as I sit here typing on a battery driven laptop that didn’t exist 30 years ago, to a virtual community that didn't exist 2 years ago. My My time does fly..almost as fast as this will when I hit that submit button.

I've been to several DragonCon conventions in Atlanta over the years as well as several other smaller Cons. I'm a fan of pretty much all sci-fi. Grew up watching Star Trek reruns at my mom's feet.
DragonCon used to have quite a GBLT community there, but the Con changed and opted to be more 'family friendly', so you don't see it so much anymore. The first one I ever attended had a big mix of GBLT, BDSMers, cross dressing show, queer parties, etc. That's pretty much all gone now, from what I've heard.

I, as well, watched those shows along with "The Time Tunnel" and "Lost in Space" and the original "Flash Gordon". - I saw a documentary some time ago where it was stated that a number of inovations used in todays space shuttle program and the International Space Station were originally seen on and/or addapted from various scenes in Star Trek, be it the original run, Next Generation, DS-9. The folks at NASA had also talked with (RIP) Gene Rodenberry (and visa-versa) where they exchanged many ideas and theories.
And dont forget the Starwars trilogy with prequels, a lot of good sci-fi daydreams there as well.
But alas, I must confess, I have not been to any sci-fi cons :(

I wonder if there are any conferences for that?

while i love the movies and enjoy the sci fi channel, i really love the books.. niven, heinlein, asimov, pournelle, mccaffery, etc. for me, it's great stimulation that also helps relax me and get me away from the weeks toils and troubles.

like many others i've not been to a convention of any kind. just never had the time i guess.

I'm a closet bisexual as well as a closet sci-fi fan. Be careful when starting a Star Trek topic because I will talk your ear off whether you're interested or not. I've only made it to local conventions but hope to make it to Vegas for the annual convention at some point in my life. A visit to Quark's for a drink would be the bomb. I'm also a fan of the Stargate shows and am hooked on Battlestar Galactica, although I've missed every episode for the current year :(

Scifi and horror shows are most of what I watch. For anyone who hasnt seen check out Dr. Who on scifi. I've always loved that show. As for str trek not crazy enough to dress up and go to something like. Also I'm a big comic bookfan and the comicons tend to have a bit of everything there.

Major scifi and fantasy geek here  I'm a Star Trek fan, love the new Dr. Who, love Buffy, Outer Limits, the original Lost in Space, all the old shows. I'm very much out of the closet on that topic.

When we lived in Atlanta, we used to go to DragonCon, but that was before I was out to myself so I wasn't looking for other LGBT folks. Although even then I loved looking at the ladies in body paint and scant clothing.

I got to meet the actor who played Dr. Smith and Hubby, my best friend, her bf and I spent about three hours hanging out and talking to Richard Hatch and his friends.

Being a geek is SO much fun!

There are, there definitely are.

Now, it's not the darker stuff like you mentioned above, but my wife was trying to talk me into going to a Tolkien convention locally a couple years back. (It's when the Lord of the Rings movie craze was really going.) I'd make a funny looking hobbit, though, so it's probably just as well something else came up at the last minute....

Maybe I've missed the point of this thread, I like the new Dr Who. This evening I also watched Torchwood - which is a Dr Who spin off. Very good. Star Trek for the most part was the same idea filmed too many times. Deep Space 9 however was the best outing for Trek.

We're glad to see that we arent alone. Both of us are sci-fi fans here and our kids are following in our footsteps. Our current household favorite is Battle Star on SCI-FI. My wife tends to be more into novels. Me, Im a movie and TV sci-fi geek. As others have said, I could talk your ears off for hours about Trek. In fact Ive gotten to know a few of the authors over the years. But I also love everythign from Forbidden Planet, to Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, to Dr Who and everything in between

As for cons and dressing up, nope you dont have to do that at all. When ever we go its always in our normal everyday clothes. At first we were gunshy about the conventions but once we attended one we got into it. Its enjoyable to meet the stars, writers, producers and all and get to listen to them during the public forums and have drinks with them later on. Last year one of our friends brought her 18 year old daughter and the actor Robert Beltram was trying to score so hard. It was hillarious to watch her blow him off time and time again.

I think my user name says it all.
I LOVE sci-fi in all its forms:
Any story/book by Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, plus the movies 2001 and 2010; collected short sci-fi stories; I've seen every single episode of the (original) Twilight Zone; vampires, Buffy, X-men, and so very much more.

Never been to a convention... not sure if I will. (I dunno if I'd count Tolkien as sci-fi specifically, but I would like to go to a Tolkien con.)

Definitely a sci fi fan. Love the books, the movies, the TV shows--whatever I can get my hands on. Right now I am really loving the Stargates, Dr. Who, and Battlestar Galactica on the Sci Fi channel. All the shows other people mentioned above, I enjoy, too. Is anyone else watching the new show Heroes? It has me hooked! No conventions as of yet, but won't count them out. I have a friend who speaks Klingon, but can't boast that I do. I am out and proud to be a sci fi geek!

My wife and I are both big sci-fi junkies. I'm way into Bob Heinlein (are there any poly people out there who aren't?) and a lot of the current writers who picked up his torch - Spider Robinson, David Gerrold (either gay or bi, who wrote the classic episode Trouble With Tribbles). Lately I'm more into darker fantasy stuff - Jim Butcher, Simon R Greene (supposedly gay, according to a guy I met who met him). My wife is more into the chick (sorry, really not trying to be offensive) fantasy stuff, like Charlaine somebody's Southern Vampire stuff, and Buffy the Slayer stuff, and that dark vampire stuff The Bitten, as well as the romance-derived werewolf stuff that's out these days. She just finished Borchardt's Dragon Queen about Guinevere and loved it.

We've gone to a few sci-fi conferences, small ones. We'd like to go to more, it seems like we can find our like kind there - bi or bi-friendly, poly, generally sex-freaky...

Count me as a sci-fi fan as well--I always have been just as I always liked the classic horror and macabre having been an early fan of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft and later a fan of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Ann Rice.

I have always been a fan of Star Trek since its earliest days-but not so much now--something seems to be lacking in the Star Trek universe of late.

I had liked the original Battlestar Gallactica even though it was a bit cheesy, but the new one is really incredible--it is an incredible story irrespective of its "sci-fi" basis---

I have been to one Star Trek convention but could never bring myself to dress up in a uniform or something---

In my opinion that missing element is conflict. When Gene Roddenberry started TNG during his drug addled days, his desire to show humanity in his utopian vision, while nice, totally took away a lot of critical elements to show conflict which in turn makes for interesting stories. Its cause of this that I think that DS9 is the best post orignal series Trek show out there. Ron Moore was able to use all the aliens to be the vehicles of conflict by having them adopt many of the problems that humanity had shed in this universe.

I have to agree with Pasco--of the later Star Trek series---DS9 really was one of the best of the series--I did not think so much at the time it was on but recently I caught a few episodes that are airing on SPIKE TV---

The episodes I caught were about the Federation war with the dominion--this one episode had Captain Cisco agonizing about some of the steps he took---somewhat underhanded to say the least--to get the Romulans to join the Federation in the war.

It was a very good story---some of the other episodes that I have seen also dealt with the war and how it changed the characters---from all of these--you would have thought that the writers had a crystal ball or something and saw the events of 9/11 and our current war--those story lines they had in those shows very much relate to what is happening in our current war and the the way we are today post 9/11.

that would be "In The Pale Moon Light" and that is probably the best, if not in the top 5, of episodes on that show.

Captain Jack (Torchwood) isn't going to be the only bi character in it.

One of his team had a bottle of 'alien aftershave' which caused anyone who inhaled it to want sex with him.

He used it on a woman in a nightclub, she dragged him out and along the street where her boyfriend caught up with them and was going to bash his face in until he received a spray where the punch became a full on snog and the words "I'm so having you".

Farscape was fantastic as was B5. The animated stuff from the 60s was good as well, unfortunately you couldnt do the same today.

As for DS9 being better than Voyager, Id have to say that DS9 was nearly as good as TOS.

"Fireball-XL5", . . . OH_MY_GOD, . . . in over 35 years, very, very few even had a clue of what I was talking about when I asked if they'd ever watched or remember watching that show as a kid growing up in the 60's ! ! ! The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Star Trek, . . . wow, what a flash back this post is to me. LOL

While in the Army back in the early 80's, I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club (as well as the Military Book Club), and between the two clubs I ended up owning over $1500.00 worth of hardback books after a couple years. 75% of them were Si-Fi, the remaining 25% were Vietnam and Military Aviation books.

Some of the Si-Fi books/authors I got into:
"Dragonriders of Pern", McCaffrey; "Book of Skaith", Leigh Brackett; "The Faded Sun Triology", Cherryh; The entire "John Carter of Mars" series, Edgar Rice Burroughs; "The Compleat Enchanter", L. Sprague deCamp and Fletcher Pratt; "The First and the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant", Stephen R. Donaldson just to name a few I loved.

As an adult, it's really not until the last couple of decades that I've gotten into watching TV, but it has evolved some wonderful and fascinating Si-Fi shows. I find the current Battlestar Galactica to be head and shoulders above the original series. Just about every single show that's been mentioned so far in this thread I say "Hell yeah!" I've always thought that Science Fiction was a very real way of seeing into the future, (today's science fact almost suredly was at some time yesterday's science fiction). I feel I have to mention the movie "Serenity", silly as some may think it was, something about it really got me.

I'm so out there with Science Fiction, I didn't know there even WAS such a thing as a "closet Si-Fi fan" . . . LOL!

I finally watched the most recent episode of Battlestar Gallactica last night---man what a show--forget that it has a Sci-Fi aspect to it--it is simply some incredible storytelling--such great writing and acting by all on that show.

For anyone who has been watching--did the Pegasus get destroyed in liberating the people from New Caprica? I figure it must have.

Also for anyone who watches the show---are they going to find Earth? I think they are--that was part of the storyline of the original show--they are following some of the steps that show took.

If they find Earth--is the Earth they find our Earth in our time? I bet it will be--it would make a great storyline at how we in the place we are now, would accept some long lost human cousins who probably are responsible for our society----

Another comment on Star Trek: DS9---I also remember several episodes where Ben Cisco is called back to Earth to take command of security for the planet. He finds that the supposed attack by the Dominon on the planet's electrical grid was actually done by a group of rogue Federation officers including a top admiral who is planning to take over the government--Sisco, being the good guy he normally is--stops the plan----

There is so much in that storyline that was so prescient about what we are facing now--it's like the writers of those episodes were looking into a crystal ball or something---

As to finding Earth, anyone's guess is as good as the next person. The only thing we do know is that they do believe that Earth is out there, they have found evidence to support that belief, and they are actively searching for it. As to what Earth they find, who knows. Could be a prehistoric earth, could be a modern day one or even one in the future. Knowing Ron Moore and the swerves he likes to throw, it will be a post apocalyptic earth

As for the DS9 episode you are referring to, yeah Ron Moore seems to be good at posting warning signs and commentary.

Jus read that the actor who plays Capn Jack is gay...awwwwww :( !!! But the character is bi....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Progress on telly at last!! Ta Auntie beeb!!!!

I was reading this thread wondering if anyone was going to mention Torchwood! It's a bit daft (fight between a cyber and a pterodactyl?) but I can't help being totally excited by there being a mainstream, high ratings TV show with openly bi lead characters - but where their bisexuality is not the main point of the plot, and they're not all ridiculous stereotypes. Say ta to Russell T Davies too!

I think there is quite an overlap between gay/bi people and sci-fi fans. (At least, I seem to know an awful lot of gay male Dr Who fans - and this dating back from before they started casting hot guys as doctor!) Maybe it's something to do with being outside the norm, open-mindedness, alternative societies, etc? In my case it's mostly a fascination with people's conceptions of what future society might be like (both serious and silly takes on it). But I'm a fussy sci-fi fan; I dislike a lot of it. And some of it is very sexist which pisses me off.

Anyone here care to share their favourite sci-fi pin-ups?
I have a bit of a thing for Starbuck in BSG (NEW version not old!), but she was sexier when she had short hair. Appollo used to be dead fit too, but WTF has happened to him? So unfair!
And anyone used to watch Bab5? Ivanova was a massive icon to many of us bi gals (as well as being gorgeous).

12voltman59
Nov 6, 2006, 9:49 AM
I definitely was a fan of Babylon 5 as well--

You don't have to worry--Apollo is back to being buff--they had all the characters on Battlestar get rough during the stay on the planet--those who went down grew beards and such and even Admiral Adama--(Edward James Olmos' character grew his moustache out)

Having everyone "slip" was a comment by the writers that everyone had either gotten complacent, lazy or depressed and had lost focus on what they were doing.

In the most recent episode--Starbuck cut her hair back, the guys who grew beards shaved them and Apollo got buff again.

The are all "squared away" again.

As far as sci-fi pin up are concerned--Seven of Nine on ST:Voyager was hot, so was the Borg queen from the one ST:TNG movie First Contact; the Orion slave girls from Enterprise and Ta'Pau was very hot.

The Sharon models on BSG as well as the blonde one look great too.

And anyone used to watch Bab5? Ivanova was a massive icon to many of us bi gals (as well as being gorgeous). Yep I still have the playboy issue with her in it.

As for sci-fi pin ups? Man there are so many to mention...Raquel Welch (Fantastic Voyage), Barbara Eden (Voyage to the bottom of the sea) Susan Oliver and Angelique Pettyjohn from Star Trek for starters. The afore mentioned Claudia Christiansen from B5, Joelen Blaylock form Enterprise, Grace Park from BSG. Let us not forget Galaxina either.

ITs taken me some adjustment. I think the show tends to make folks uncomfortable on many levels. I also think that the show is missing some classic TV / movie sci-fi aliens (that will probably never appear on BSG). That alone is causing some problems.
