I know we all have to face rude annoying people every day whenever we go out in public.

Normally I really don't care what people think of me. If they don't like it then too bad for them. :)

But there are moments, rude people tend to say such words that makes me feel down and dumb :(

Living in a place where deaf people are unheard of is VERY VERY VERY VERY hard. If you didn't hear someone then course they auto think YOU'RE the one being rude. Ugh!!

I have 2 signs at work. A big one that is taped under the cash register display screen (where you can see everything being scanned) and a small one thats under my name tag.
People don't read those, give me this "your being rude" glare or get annoyed I misheard them or didn't hear them lol Yes I know its not my fault but THIERS especially when they didn't read the sign but still......
To have someone say "Are you deaf stupid?" is soooo nasty to hear. (yes he saw the sign... i don't know if he read it properly lol)
He said that cause I was having a hard time understanding him. We're in a GROCERY STORE... it gets loud which is quite hard when your deaf cause you sometimes are unware of how loud it really is.

Ugh.... theres moments I wanna strangle some people hehe (don't we all?) Eldery people I find VERY hard to understand. Some are easy but others makes me go "what the heck is she/he saying?" then I have to get the cashier behind me to tell me what they said.

How fusterating..... At least the manager has been getting good comments about me so maybe thats a good thing lol

I hate it when people assume Im rude then being stupid or "acting deaf" (Yes, people have said that)

Why oh why do I have to be sooooooo nice? lol In my head I clearly have pently to say to all those rude people but again, it wouldn't be smart to do that at work lol According to some rule. the customer is always right..... NOT!

The people are given decent notification about the cashier/you being deaf. They are jack-asses being rude to you.

As long as you are doing your job and doing it well, (and from what you said about the manager, sounds like you are) that's all you need to think about. I know jerks can be frustrating. Keep your head up........and breathe :)

It's their karma sweetie. One day they're realize what unobservant, self-absorbed people they're acting. Either that or something similar will happen to them and they'll realize that they've been acting inappropriately.

I know that doesn't help right now and I'm sorry you're having to deal with people who are inexcusably rude.

Something that may help is to try to find some compassion for *them*. Understanding that they were raised by cave dwelling Trolls who didn't teach them common courtesy might help bring a smile to that pretty face. :)

Sometimes it also helps to answer their rhetorical question literally and with a sunshine bright smile in the most concerned, polite voice you can muster. So if someone says "Are you deaf stupid?" The answer is "Yes sir, I'm deaf. No, I'm intelligent. Are you literate?" and point to your name tag :bigrin:

I'm sure that most that give you a hard time can and are just part of the "I'm the center of the universe and everything should evolve around me so don't slow me down" crowd and eventually will get theirs in return...unfortunately those types never seem to "get it".

Someone online told me I should add FREE or DISCOUNT on them cause people always seem to read that lol

They can read I know cause they are reading the display screen when I scan thier groceries. lol

Hi Tasha, I sometimes get the same comments as you. I also get "well, you don`t look deaf/hard of hearing!" I usually reply "what am I supposed to look like?" or "you don`t look human".
It also bugs me when I don`t quite catch what people say & I ask them to repeat it please & they say "oh, forget about it-it doesn`t matter".
If i`m in a silly mood I give them a silly answer - "Hull 9 Wigan 6" ( a reference to rugby)
You could give them a wind up smile if they call you stupid - I do! It irritates some people!

Maybe you could come up with some hand sign, you know, kinda like the sign language symbols, that could mean something like, 'KISS MY BLOOMIN ARSE YOU OLD GOAT' or maybe, 'TAKE YOUR STUPID ATTITUDE AND PUT IT WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE' or maybe even, 'KISS MY ARSE YOU IGNORANT PERSON'. You get the gist. I'm afraid that the only sign I could come up with would be thought of as very, very rude and would not be tolerated in the work place. But it would be fun.... no?

i used to work in customer service and retail and it really amazed me how many rude, ignorant and uneducated customers there are in the world. that line of work almost drove me completely insane.. Tasha, i don't envy you or anyone else out there that has to put up with the public and their brutal manners day after day.

I learnt to talk cause my mom spent hours and hours and hours teaching me.
Put your hand on your thorat and say any word.... you can feel the voicebox and vibe... easy for deaf people to learn to talk :)
Those with hearing aids and cochlear implant are able to sound out words better tho. :)

I don't really count those that went deaf later in life cause they were speaking and all before they went deaf due to illness or accident.
