Both funny and sad simultaneously...

It is funny and sad, like you said.

Israel is not exactly a GLBT paradise either, but they get a stream of gays from the Palestinian Authority and neighboring countries seekiing asylum.

Intolerance thrives in stessful times.

I wouldn't be so eager to get judgmental about this. In their culture it is something that is considered wrong.

Never underestimate the stupidity of theocratic societies.

After all, the church is zero for thousands when it comes to science.

I lived in Dubai for 15 years and can assure you it's an autocratic society not theocratic. Still not ideal, but what is?

blueKetch, I'd be curious to hear what you think of this campaign because of your experience. The transition Dubai is going through right is very interesting and has very broad implications about the cultural development of the wider middle east. Certainly one of the most liberal places in the middle east right now, but still very fundamentalist in some ways. I wonder about how the native population is dealing with the influx of foreign values. This campaign and the British sex-on-the-beach couple case make me think a pretty strong push back by the natives is starting to happen, but I wonder is that just the government trying to throw a sop to them.
