Since you had to bring up "politics" in this thread--I would say that if there was any "public money" that went into the research that these scientists are doing---I would suppose that it is a rather "modest amount" --those researchers are not getting rich in doing that research--and doing basic scientific research such as this only helps to make our country strong in economic terms since it is never known what sort of discoveries such research can lead to--like cures for disease and other medical conditions--and those in turn--do lead to economic benefits--if we in the US don't conduct such primary research with our money--I can assure you--countries like China sure as hell are heavy into such research--better that any benefits that derive from such research goes to "us" in the west than to China or other countries---and whatever they spent for that research--I'd rather taxpayer dollars go to that than to the top dogs at financial firms like Goldman Sachs that helped lead us into the current economic situation--who are making out like bandits on the taxpayer billions---and they are not doing one damn thing to improve the quality of life beyond their own self-aggrandizement--all those assholes are doing with their money--going out and helping some high end real estate agents make some money when they buy a few more mansions around the world, the salespeople at Bentley or Rolls dealers and things of that nature!!!

I don't know what value per se such research is gained from watching flat worms "penis fence" ---I am sure it does have some value--you never know-such research can unexpectedly lead to something really important by opening the door to say, curing some form of cancer they could not previously crack-----and the search for knowledge for knowledge sake has its own intrinsic value--a much better human activity than a bunch of Wall Street money makers going out and buying tons of "shit" (high end, high dollar material goods that while nice to have are not really vital to living a good life) just because they have the money to buy loads of things they think they need but don't really have any use for other than to say--"I just got a hundred million dollar bonus thanks to you sucker US taxpayers-so I can go out and buy all the shit I want to-so fuck the rest of you schmucks!!"
