Early last Sunday morning a man who lives in Nova Scotia, about 25 mi from me awoke before the sun came up to discover a seven foot high cross burning in his front yard. Holy Fuck! The man is black, his live in is not, they have small kids who were also exposed to this crap. It is so wrong, I am disgusted that this goes on in my own country let alone anywhere else.
I am very pissed off that this type of hatred still goes on, Jesus people, Smarten the fuck up!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the bad language folks but I am really mad. So mad that I can't even type anymore about this, so I'll submit it and let the people speak!
Oh yeah, they caught the arseholes that did it, they are related to the guys spouse, Geez!:soapbox:

That really is bad, but unfortunately as you pointed out it still happens. And it will until the world realizes there is one race: Human.

Idiots indeed Cat.. 21st century and still people hate as if it was the 19th and think less of other human beings because of colour of skin.. I am surprised that its Canada. I wasnt aware that cross burning happened in Canada.
In our own way we have our cross burning.. while there is racism in Scotland which can be put down to colour of skin, the most rampant racism is against a people with whom we have been in political union for 303 years. We have a love hate relationship with our southern neighbour and partner, the English. People are assaulted because they are English, discriminated against because they are English, bullied for the same reason. There are historical reasons why this exists but in this day and age these reasons are without justification, not that they could ever be justified.
A recent development which I call cross burning, is a company producing T shirts. On these T shirts is the logo ABE.. Anyone But England. This refers to the forthcoming World Cup and the very predominant Scottish pastime of baiting the English. In short.. we dont care who wins the World Cup as long as its not the English. The company denies it is racism.. it is meant as a joke. Well it is a joke in poor taste, and not only fosters racism north of the border but potentially in the south as well.
I do not want England to win the world cup. The very thought scares me silly. Not for racist reasons, but family ones. My mother is English and all of her family. So I am half English and not ashamed of it. It is a part of me and while I identify as Scots, having been born and raised in Edinburgh of a Scottish father, I do not and would never deny my English heritage. But the Scottish side of the family, of which I am the most gobby, couldnt take the piss taking.. the buggers would never let us forget it. 1966 is thrown in our faces at every opportunity.. 44 years later.. childish buggers.. of course it is envy.. at football our national team cant play to save its life. We have the worst football team in our history. But to wish people ill because they are English and because of a seething hatred and resentment which many Scots feel toward them, and to have that ill feeling manifest itself in a t shirt which shouts aloud that racist sentiment is a disgrace to our country. It is a burning cross which says.. we dont like you.. we hope you fall flat on your face and worse.
But if they do win..I will have a sly smile on my face which says.. gotcha ya racist shitebags.. before I break into a sweat waiting for piss taking phone calls from uncles and cousins down south.
To us, the Welsh and the Irish, the English show a paternal attitude which in itself is a form of racism.. it is much the same superior feeling they feel about the former colonies of the old empire. But it is not as blatantly disgraceful as the often up front hatred which many Scots show to the English. That is proper racism. I am not saying we all hate the English for we do not.. but there is a sizeable minority which has such feelings.. the ABE t shirts are but one manifestation of this resentment and they simply cannot see it.
So we have our own form of cross burning in Scotland.. and it happens frequently.. it is not a one of... I wonder when the buggers will ever learn that we are "a' Jock Tamsons bairns"?:(

One assumes that 'his live in' and 'his spouse' are one and the same.
Could it have been a sick joke influenced by booze?
Regardless, not a good thing to have happened. It is made worse that the symbol for self sacrifice and love is used in such a horrible manner.
Support and disgust here.

In Scotland we had an ancient custom of cross burning which had a diifferent connotation.. when the nation was in danger (usually an English invasion, but sometimes an invasion by the Scots of England) in medieval times the King would send messengers through the country with a fiery cross (a burning saltire or St Andrews Cross) calling the people to arms. Since it involved strife with another people this too arguably had a racist connotation but was then considered more a symbol of national unity..
.. just a little lesson in history not strictly to the point..sorry me lufflies..:)

A terrible event ... but an opportunity for the community to gather around this fellow and demonstrate that it's only the deviants among us who'd so such a stupid thing!

I read this article. At least they did not find someone hanging!
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/02/noose-at-ucsd-triggers-probe-and-protest.html
On a campus already facing racial tensions, UC San Diego police said Friday that they were investigating the discovery of a noose hanging from a library bookcase and questioning a student who may be responsible.
The probe will look into whether the noose -- which was seen by some as a symbol of lynching meant to intimidate African Americans on the campus -- was connected to recent racially charged incidents and subsequent protests at UCSD.
On Friday, campus officials said they were questioning a student who had come forward to take some responsibility for the noose, but that they had no additional information to release for the moment. A police statement said authorities were treating the noose, found Thursday night on a seventh-floor bookcase in Geisel Library, as a crime with “intent to terrorize.”
Word about the noose triggered another protest on the campus Friday morning, with about 300 students participating, a campus spokesman said. The school has been roiled since a Feb. 15 off-campus party invited guests to a “Compton Cookout” that mocked Black History Month.
A few days later, a campus satirical group used a derogatory term about African Americans on a campus television show. Those incidents have focused attention on UCSD's low enrollment of black students, who make up about 1.6% of the school’s undergraduates.
I recall there being reports in the news a few years back about a rash of nooses being found in public places around the country----it seems that the saying "what is old is new again" applies to remaining vestages of a very dark time in our nation's history.
When are people ever going to get past that crap?? I will say one thing though--those who are young and do it---I think just like a lot of things young people tend to to---they just don't think out the implications of doing something like this thinking, "its just a joke--I didn't mean nothing by it!" To accept that a kid who says this is probably telling the truth is not to minimize such a stupid act---but it does provide at least an explanation as to why it was done.
On the subject of lynching----the National Underground Railroad Museum and Freedom Center in Cincinnati currently is hosting a program on the days of lynching:
http://www.freedomcenter.org/without-sanctuary/
If anyone who is interested in this subject and happens to make your way to to this part of the country----check out the Center and exhibition.

Did these idiots cheer Canada's 2 women Bobsleigh silver winning team? Which happen to have Shelley-Ann Brown, an African-Canadian?

I have serious doubts those morons cheer for any sport whatsoever. Tools like that likely don't bother with normal or common aspects of life like being sports fans, or contributing in a positive way to their community. all they want to do is cause trouble, and make innocent people's lives hell. They likely don't know what a bobsleigh is let alone cheer for the canucks to do well with it. Arrrgh, it's so damn annoying!

Oh yes Peg, it certianly is a blackmark on my little corner of the world. Ironically in Halifax on the very morning that the story broke about the arrest of the 2 wankers that are accused of this hateful act, the mayor of Halifax apoligised to the former residents of Africville (a community of African Canadians whose homes were leveled to make way for a container peir and a bridge in the city) However no mention of this incident was made during his speech and the cross burning incident trumped the apology in all the news casts and papres out here. If the people that did this were looking for a way to take away from the impact of Halifax city government trying to make amends for that injustice of 40 years ago... they found it! On the upside, the whole community where the victims live has rallied around them, and are showing support, there is also a face book page that has been set up so others can show their support as well. Nova Scotians will survive and move past this crap, as for the jerks that did this, maybe a few years on a rockpile with a pick and shovel will teach them a lesson, do chain gangs still exist in the prison system?

Ironic how I am diagnosed with a disability that is supposed to partially or fully take away empathy, and yet these bigots probably get off with no diagnosis at all, cus they are so darn superficially charming.
Discrimination at it's finest (and yet it's interesting that I would view this through a "disability rights" filter.).

Yesterday, the two men(and I use that term loosely) that are charged with inciting this hateful act, along with several other charges under the criminal code were released on bail. And ordered to stay with their grandparents. The have a 9"pm - 6 am curfew, and have been ordered to stay away from the victims, and the victims property (like that will work!). Other than that they are free do do what ever they want. Oh yes, the grandparents of these guys live 5 minutes away from the victims. Is it just me or does anyone else think that these bail conditions are a bit stupid and lax, should they be out on bail at all? I am opening a pool on how many days it takes them to do another hate crime! I say Monday March 8 by 8:00pm there will be another incident. Anyone else care to make a guess on the next crime?:2cents:
