This was found on BiChOn LoVeRs, a dog owners social site. One of a few that my wife is a part of on behalf of our dog.


EVERYONE!! ABC NEWS IN NC WANTS TO DO AN EXPOSE STORY ON ROBESON County Animal Shelter

Allegations:
1. This shelter performs "heartstick" euthanasia without sedation and the
workers actually enjoy inflicting pain on the animals and relish in
heartsticking them without sedation which from what I understand the
noises alone from the animal would make you and I sick.

2. He is intentionally not checking messages and working with rescues and
instead he is actively blocking rescue work by maliciously euthanizing
animals that rescuers are trying to save.

3. He and the other workers poured bleach on a litter of puppies and watched and laughed as
the momma dog tried desperately to help her babies.

4. A direct witness saw a dog dead in its food bowl (there is a picture) when she went down to rescue some dogs and no one even bothered removing the dog and just left it there dead.

5. They do not monitor the dogs conditions well and often puppies die unnecessarily and they do not care.

From a rescuer: Six weeks ago I was involved with a pull from there. An
emaciated terrier mix had had 8 pups. The shelter worker could not be
bothered after 2 days to tell us how many pups were still alive. 3 died
in the shelter. 1 on the way to the vet and one more the first evening
at their foster. The 3 remaining pups had severe crusting and burns on
their paws from the bleach used. When they were at the "shelter" they
were on a wooden pallet with no bedding, not even a cardboard box or
newspaper to keep the pups warm, Today the babies are thriving in
foster, but Mom will need long term care. This place is a disgrace.

TO MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS POSSIBLE. CONTACT THE MEDIA TOO!

Tiny newborn babies and their moms lying on the cold cement floor. On several occasions beds have been donated to the shelter and
the staff refuses to put the beds in with the moms and babies because
"it is too much trouble." ALSO JEFF BASS THE SHELTER MANGER STATED THEY
ARE JUST DOGS AND DO NOT NEED BEDS!!!!

Withholding medical care from animals when they are visibly sick or injured is against NC
law and the stated policies of the local animal control. According to
this shelter's policy, the shelter can release dogs to foster care if
they feel the medical needs warrant such action. The staff, however,
has yet to agree to this despite multiple plea's from rescues and the
general public.

Sometimes they do sedate them but they do it with food, not a shot. They wait until the dog can't fight back and
then heartstick, while the dogs are still alert. I doubt they sedate at
all if dogs are friendly and don't put up a fight.

Hopefully, the writer of this email as well as the rescuers mentioned will contact ABC who needs information in order to do an
expose of this "shelter"!

As a side note: a veterinarian in Onslow Country contacted me and put our website up on their site as the
"shelters" in their area (and apparently in all of North Carolina) -
are hell holes.

GAH....everytime I go onto the pets section on craigslist people are SPAMMING the crap out of that section with stuff about Robeson. I know they are horrible and all, but I'm so friggin sick of seeing it! Now it's here too!

Seriously though, that place sucks. The video footage of that place is heartbreaking. I'm hoping that sometime after my husband comes home, we can run down there and try to adopt an animal.

Well, the idea is to get enough interest from the real horrors of the place so that the national news can run with an investigation to get the place shut down and the abusers prosecuted.

ABC news has already made it public that for those who have been actively saying they have witnessed things or to the few people who have footage to come and speak with them and they will gladly run a full story about it. Can't wait to see that one.

I love my dog dearly. I could not finish reading your entire OP as I found it disturbing to read. I stopped shortly after reading twice how the puppies were treated.

When I got my Pug as a pup, the owner of her mother told me that she was happy for my dog because she was going with me. I didn't quite understand but eventually caught on that she knew that I would be good to my dog. She is spoiled rotten. The vet says to me that is how they are to be treated: With love and caring.

I wish you well with dealing with this horrible situation and rescue efforts though.

You should read about what happened to one of our friends on Doggyspace.com.
She is part of a rescue group; called the guy there to hold some of the dogs for the next day and he said he would. She drove for 5 hours to get there and he told her that he had already euthanised them all, claiming that he didn't think that she was serious, then denied to the media and other folks that the incident ever happened at all.

I want to see him and the others there punished to the maximum extent of the law. I want to see those people put in a freezing cell without a bed and be told that it wasn't worth the effort to give them one. I want to see them live in their own feces and urine, have bleach poured on them and go through the exact same house of horrors that they put their animals through.

People like that just push my need for justice past my self control to obey the law. People like that need to be euthanised, not poor, innocent dogs and cats.

In cases, as you have described, the RSPA Inspector would accompany local police to investigate the complaint.

If the animals were found to be living in inadequate conditions, or being abused, they are taken into care there and then. The abuser is fined and banned from keeping animals in future.

I understood your American Humane Association to be your equivalent of our R.S.P.C.A.

So why haven't they investigated in tandem with local police or sheriffs?

Also any animals put to sleep here is by means of overdose of anaesthetic, administered by lethal injection. I don't understand what you mean by heartstick. Is it some type of electric rod discharging a current to electrocute the animal?

Heartstick is a lethal injection that they place directly into the heart. The needle goes through the chest and into the heart where it is injected. Unfortunately, this is hard to do because with the lungs and heart constantly moving, the heart may not always be hit, which is why the animals are supposed to be sedated (not to mention that it is painful as fuck). Supposedly, this is something that is not the easiest thing to do for a trained vet, let alone some guy working at the shelter. If it goes into the heart, death is quick. If it missed the heart, they are in horrible pain until eventually they die from the injection.

You can google this stuff up. A simple search for robeson county on youtube will bring up the video showing the animals having this done to them without sedation.

As far as I'm aware,in the UK, they give the lethal injection of ananaesthetic in the flank or the shoulder and the death of the animal is virtually instantaneous.

I had a dog many years ago, that was very old and sick with cancer so I had the vet put him to sleep, to prevent him suffering any further.

Only vets can legally, administer these injections here in the UK. For pet owners, they usually allow the owners to be present if they wish, as it helps calm the animal.

It is an awful decision to make though, ending the life of an animal that has given so much love and companionship in order to alleviate its pain and misery.

I also think the penalties for cruelty to animals should be much higher than at present and that such people should be banned for life from keeping further animals.

There are certain animal charities here that will not put a healthy animal down.eg. Canine Defence League.

I suppose for animal shelters in the US it would depend on their budget constraints, as to how many animals they could keep and for how long, before having to put them down.

In times of economic hardship or recession, more animals, unfortunately, tend to get abandoned by their owners, who find themselves no longer able to meet the bills for their care and feeding.

I don't know if it is the same in the US, but in the UK, if you want to own a dog you have to pay a licence fee to the Local Councel, this helps towards the cost of wardens and animal pounds.

The only thing to do with anyone being cruel to animals is to try and ensure they are prosecuted to the full extent the law allows and that they are banned from keeping animals ever again.

As owners of three dogs (all from rescue) a cat, two ferrets, and a bearded dragon we are appalled that this could take place, how is it that if these things are truely going on there is no stopping them. Why would they not be investigated? What amazes us is the fact that you see Tiger Woods all over the news because he cheated on his wife......who gives a fuck........its really nobody's business but his, his wives, and the bimbos he fucked, but yet they plaster it all over the news for weeks but then you here of something like this and see nothing on the news.....are we to believe that people care more about some golf pro's sex life than innocent animals.......fuck Tiger and his sex life.........we would like to see more "real" news. The sad thing is that this is probably going on in many more places......yet the general public is more interested in the possability that Tiger was not very sincere in his apology.........ha.........just goes to show you that news ratings are more important than cruelty and utter disregard for life.

They have actually been investigated in the past. The had shut down the original shelter and started a new one...this one...to get a fresh start where they claimed they were no longer doing the things that they were originally sued over years ago. However...judging by the complaints and the video...things don't look so hot...
