This occured to me while reading a some posts where the posters equated rednecks with ignorance.
I thought this site was about trying to leave behind stereotypes and love everyone? hell we might as well say, black people are thugs , iraqi people are terrorists, Americans from the northern states are conservative jesus freaks , blonde blue eyed people have to be german descendants therefore they are nazis, lesbians are man haters, gay men are wimps. need i go on? this site is supposed to be about open-mindedness,not grouping the people into stereotypes that we as bisexual people face every day. i'm sorry does anyone else see hypocrisy here? some preach about openmindedness then end up doing just what the people who belittle and degrade them do: Stereotype

operative word * TRYING *
human nature dictates the status quo of society... plain and simple
its possible that people are using a group to define the actions of people, a group that people can relate to via the groups actions and attitudes
simply, we are all different people with different ways of express and understanding.... what appears racist or sexist etc to one person, may just be a persons way for explaining the type of people they are dealing with... and there may be no true intent to offend, hurt or attack others... and the only true offense, may be what we read into the original remarks....

Thank you for standing up. I am from a small redneck town. I am so redneck it isn't funny. However I too felt that they where lumping me in with stupid people. Hell, if staying with a bi or gay man isn't bieng open minded then I don't know what is. Yes some in the South or even in the bible belt are racist or gay bashers. But not all. I just did not want to say anything becuase I am the str8 person and did not want to get bashed for my heritage. I love the south. I love the friendliness and the way people go out of their way just to say hello. I know most of the people here said it because that is all they know or what is portrayed in shows. That is my :2cents: .
Now I am off my :soapbox:

Good point well made Mandy... Otherwise we end up with having hierarchies of minority/oppressed groups.. messy!

I've never judged someone by the amount or lack of pigmentation in their skin.
Never cared about anyones style, colour, length of hair.
I don't base worth on height, weight, or any limb.
Won't treat someone based on the clothes they wear.
What I've value...is what resides in a person's personality, their heart, their soul. If they can share who they are with others, I celebrate. I don't have to agree with it, or even like it...
There are incredible individuals in every grouping named...who can rise above the stereotypes, the 'accepted views', the beliefs... painting any group with the same brush is not giving those individuals respect.
Even in this site, read any forum topic asking for an opinion. There is an amazing variation of ideas, and that is what I focus on. Life is so dull when everyone is the same.
....and there are some real characters in here!! *grin* I like it!

In fairness, though, in the US there is a very strong correlation between living in a rural area and being homophobic. I'm personally persuaded by the argument that living in a large city tends to break down prejudices, because you're around people who are different from you; whereas it's possible to live your whole life in the country or a small town and never meet anyone who's out. (Same goes for people of other races and religions.)
It's certainly an oversimplification to say "rural = prejudiced, urban = not"; suburbs, for example, tend to draw people fleeing the diversity of the cities where they work, and can be pretty closed-minded places. And these are just tendencies - you can find fair-minded people in the country and in the suburbs, and bigots in the cities.
But the correlation is real - Google up some of the polls on same-sex marriage that correlate responses to population density, and you'll see that it isn't so much a blue state/red state split as a city/country split. When did "open-minded" start meaning "ignoring the facts"?
I know I've often been frustrated with the silly ideas people from the coasts have about Indiana, but it's certainly true that it's a more prejudiced place, and the farther out in the country you get, the more open people are about it.
